Material selection is fundamental to every Hubway Stone project. Marble, travertine, limestone, onyx, quartzite, granite, and other natural stones each bring different visual and physical characteristics to an architectural application.
Our approach is not based on choosing stone by color alone. Scale, veining, texture, finish, intended use, fabrication requirements, and the natural characteristics of an individual block or slab all influence the final result.
Marble
Marble offers an extraordinary range of visual expression, from quiet white and cream varieties to stones defined by dramatic veining, color, and movement.
Its ability to be carved, shaped, and finished makes marble particularly suited to sculptural applications including bathtubs, sinks, fireplaces, furniture, architectural details, and custom objects.
Because marble is a natural material, veining and coloration can vary considerably even within the same quarry or stone selection. For custom work, this variation becomes an important part of material selection and composition.
Travertine
Travertine is defined by warmth, texture, and geological depth. Its characteristic pores and layered structure give it a tactile quality that works particularly well with monolithic and sculptural forms.
Depending on the selection and finish, travertine can feel refined and minimal or intentionally raw and expressive.
We use travertine across interior and exterior applications, including bathtubs, basins, fountains, furniture, planters, landscape elements, and architectural features.
Limestone
Limestone often provides a quieter architectural presence. Its generally restrained movement and subtle tonal variation make it particularly suitable for projects where material continuity and understated texture are important.
Different limestones vary significantly in density, fossil content, coloration, and surface character. Selection therefore depends not only on appearance but also on the intended application and fabrication requirements.
Onyx
Onyx is selected for projects where the stone itself is intended to become a visual focal point.
Its translucency, layered coloration, and distinctive movement can create dramatic architectural effects, particularly when combined with controlled lighting. Because individual slabs and blocks can vary substantially, material selection and layout are especially important when working with onyx.
It can be considered for decorative architectural elements, furniture, lighting applications, feature surfaces, and bespoke pieces where its visual character can be fully expressed.
Quartzite & Granite
Quartzite and granite offer different combinations of visual character, density, and durability that can make them appropriate for demanding architectural applications.
Quartzite can provide dramatic movement comparable to expressive marble while offering its own distinctive physical characteristics. Granite ranges from restrained and uniform selections to highly textured and visually complex stones.
The suitability of either material depends on the design, fabrication method, dimensions, finish, and intended environment.
Natural Variation
No two pieces of natural stone are identical.
Differences in veining, color, mineral deposits, pores, fissures, fossils, and texture are inherent characteristics of quarried materials. Even stone extracted from the same geological formation can display significant variation from one block to another.
For this reason, samples and website photography should be understood as references rather than exact representations of a future piece.
For projects where appearance is particularly important, material selection may include photographs, videos, samples, or other references to the available stone before fabrication.
Material Selection for Custom Projects
Not every stone is appropriate for every design.
A material that works beautifully for a compact basin may not necessarily be the best choice for a large monolithic bathtub, an exterior fountain, or a complex architectural element. Dimensions, wall thickness, geometry, structural characteristics, finish, environment, and fabrication method all influence material suitability.
For custom projects, we evaluate these considerations alongside the desired visual direction.
